5.12 ct Cambodian Blue Zircon, Round, Heated

Zircon is a natural gemstone and has nothing to do with cubic zirconia, the synthetic diamond simulant. It has one of the highest refractive indices of any natural gem, and a well-cut stone shows strong fire similar to diamond. This round from Ratanakiri province in Cambodia has that sparkle, in a bright electric blue.

All blue zircon is produced by heating brownish zircon rough, a practice that dates back centuries in Southeast Asia. The colour is stable in normal wear. The stone is eye clean, and the doubling of the back facets, a feature of zircon’s strong birefringence, can be seen through the table with a loupe.

Zircon is brittle at the facet edges, so a bezel or a setting with a protected girdle is best for a ring. It is also an excellent pendant stone, where the fire is easy to see.
