4.38 ct Ethiopian Welo Opal, Cabochon, No Treatment

Opal from the Welo region of Ethiopia is known for a translucent crystal body and play-of-colour that rolls across the stone as it moves. This oval cabochon shows broad flashes of green and orange with blue at the edges, visible from every angle rather than only when tilted.

The opal is untreated: not smoked, dyed or stabilised. Welo opal is hydrophane, which means it can absorb water and may temporarily turn cloudy if soaked; it returns to normal as it dries. Keep it away from oils, lotions and soaking, and clean it only with a dry soft cloth.

The cabochon has a good dome with no potch or sand spots on the back. At 14 × 10 mm it suits a pendant or a ring worn with some care, since opal is softer than most faceted stones.
