3.20 ct Ceylon Blue Moonstone, Cabochon, No Treatment

Blue-sheen moonstone from Sri Lanka’s Meetiyagoda area has become much scarcer as the old deposits have been worked out, and clean stones with a strong sheen now sell for many times what they did twenty years ago. This oval cabochon has a nearly transparent body and a vivid blue sheen that moves across the dome as the stone is turned.

It is untreated and eye clean, and the dome is well centred so the sheen appears in the middle of the stone when viewed face-up, which is the most important cutting point for moonstone.

At 10 × 8 mm it suits a pendant or a ring in a bezel setting. Moonstone is fairly soft, so avoid wearing it during rough work, and clean it with warm soapy water only.
