Several of the most famous “rubies” in royal collections have turned out to be red spinel, and the best Burmese spinels show why. This cushion has a crimson red with a very slight pink edge, high brilliance and a clean, glassy look that many rubies of the same price cannot match.

Spinel is one of the few gemstones sold almost entirely without treatment, and this one is no exception. The GRS report confirms Burmese origin with no indications of heating. The stone is eye clean; under a loupe there is a tiny octahedral crystal near the girdle, a textbook spinel inclusion.

At 8 on the Mohs scale spinel is hard enough for everyday rings. A 1.87 ct Burmese red of this quality is a strong alternative to a fine ruby for a buyer who values untreated material. It would look well in a yellow gold solitaire or flanked by white diamonds.
