2.36 ct Tajik Pink Spinel, Oval, No Treatment

The Kuh-i-Lal mines in the Pamir mountains are the source of the balas rubies of Persian and Mughal history, some of which are still on display in museum collections. Material still comes out of the area in small quantities, and it has a recognisable soft, warm pink.

This oval is untreated and eye clean, with a few fine needles visible only under magnification. The tone is light to medium, so the stone reads as clearly pink rather than red, and it has an attractive glow in daylight.

An oval of about 9 × 7 mm gives good presence on the hand without being heavy. The colour pairs well with rose gold and with pearls, and suits a cocktail ring or a pendant on a fine chain.
