1.12 ct Vietnamese Purple Spinel, Round, No Treatment

Luc Yen, in northern Vietnam, produces spinels in an unusual range of colours, from pink and red to lavender, grey and cobalt blue. This round sits in the lavender-purple range: a medium tone with a slight blue secondary hue that shifts gently between daylight and warm light.

Like almost all spinel, it has not been treated. It is eye clean, with a small cloud near the culet that is visible only through the pavilion under a loupe. The round brilliant cut is precise, with a crisp star pattern and even light return.

Purple spinel is a good choice for people who like the colour of amethyst but want a harder and more brilliant stone. At 6.3 mm this fits standard round settings for a ring, stud or pendant.
