0.46 ct Kashmir Blue Sapphire, Cushion, Unheated

Kashmir sapphires are among the rarest coloured stones in the trade. The high-altitude deposit in the Zanskar range produced its best material in a few short seasons in the 1880s, and almost everything on the market today is old stock that has passed through several collections. Stones of any size with an origin report are hard to come by, and this is the only Kashmir stone we have.

The colour is a medium, slightly violetish blue with the soft, velvety look that dealers associate with the source. It comes from very fine particles that scatter light inside the stone. The sapphire is unheated, and the SSEF report confirms both the origin and the absence of treatment. It is eye clean, with fine particle clouds visible under magnification.

Please note the size: at 0.46 ct and 4.6 mm across, this is a small stone. It suits a delicate solitaire, a signet setting or a collector’s box. If you need a larger blue sapphire for a ring, our Ceylon and Madagascar stones give more size for the money.
