4.22 ct Nigerian Pink Tourmaline, Oval, Unheated

Pink tourmaline often grows with fluid inclusions, so clean stones over four carats are harder to find than the price of the material suggests. This Nigerian oval is eye clean with a bright, clear pink and only a faint orange flash at the ends of the stone.

No heat or irradiation has been used. Some pink tourmaline on the market is irradiated to deepen the colour; we buy this material as rough and cut it ourselves, so we can say where it came from and what was done to it. Under a loupe there are two small fluid inclusions near the girdle.

At 11 × 8.6 mm the stone is a good size for a cocktail ring or a pendant. Tourmaline is pleochroic, so it shows slightly different pinks from different angles; this oval has been oriented so the table shows the best colour.
