1.05 ct Burmese Ruby, Oval, Unheated

This oval comes from the Mogok valley in upper Myanmar, the deposit that set the benchmark for ruby colour. The body colour is a saturated red with a faint purplish undertone, and the chromium-rich material fluoresces in daylight, so the stone keeps its colour under warm evening light rather than turning dark the way iron-rich rubies can.

The stone is unheated, and the GRS report shows no indication of thermal treatment. Under a 10x loupe you will see short rutile silk and one small crystal near the pavilion; neither is visible face-up at normal viewing distance. We regard intact silk as a good sign in a ruby of this origin, because heating usually dissolves it.

At 6.4 × 5.2 mm it suits a solitaire ring in a four- or six-claw setting, or the centre of a halo design. The girdle is even and of medium thickness, so it will take claws without difficulty, but we still recommend a setter used to working with fine ruby.
