3.02 ct Mozambique Ruby, Cushion, Heated

Montepuez in northern Mozambique has become the main commercial source of fine ruby over the past fifteen years, and this cushion shows what the deposit produces at its better end. The colour is a deep, slightly cool red with good saturation from edge to edge. Mozambique rubies carry a little iron, so the fluorescence is moderate and the tone stays steady between daylight and indoor light.

The stone has been heated in the traditional way. The GIA report notes indications of heating and no residues in fissures, which rules out lead-glass or flux filling. Heat is the accepted norm for ruby and the result is permanent. Face-up the stone is eye clean; under magnification there are a few small fingerprints near the girdle.

The outline is slightly elongated at 8.4 × 7.6 mm and the depth is well judged, so there is no window in the centre. It is large enough for a statement ring or a pendant, and it looks particularly good against 18k yellow or rose gold, which warms the red.
