3.28 ct Tanzanite, Cushion, Heated

Tanzanite is found in only one place, a few square kilometres of the Merelani Hills near Mount Kilimanjaro. Its appeal is the combination of blue and violet in one stone, and in the better grades both are saturated. This cushion is at that level: a deep violetish blue with flashes of purple at the corners, and no grey or brown.

Almost all tanzanite is heated at low temperature to remove a brownish component and develop the blue. The change is permanent, and the GIA report states heating as expected. The stone is eye clean and appears clean under a loupe except for one small crystal near the girdle.

At 6.5 on the Mohs scale tanzanite is softer than sapphire, so we suggest it for a pendant or earrings, or for a ring worn with some care in a protective setting. The cushion cut gives a good balance of colour and brilliance.
