4.56 ct Imperial Topaz, Pear, No Treatment

Imperial topaz comes almost entirely from a small area around Ouro Preto in Minas Gerais, Brazil. The name covers the warm orange to pinkish orange colours, and prices depend heavily on how much pink or red the stone shows. This pear is a sherry orange with pink flashes at the ends, a colour well regarded in the trade.

The stone is untreated, as confirmed by the GIA report. Some imperial topaz is heated to bring out pink, but this one shows its colour naturally. It is eye clean, with a few small fluid inclusions under the loupe.

Imperial topaz grows as long, narrow crystals, which is why pears and elongated ovals are common. This one has a graceful outline and would make a fine pendant or a ring set lengthwise on the finger. Topaz has a cleavage plane, so it should be protected from hard knocks.
